The Name..
Aebleskiver is an unusual word, but quite simply it's the Danish for apple slices - which was the original unseen content of the spherical treats.
Most commonly served these days with fruit jams and sauces - either injected in the centre, over the top or alongside - the traditional apple slice version is less commonly experienced. If you want to go back to the Danish tradition then cook them with small slices of apple - by adding the apple slice or some grated apple after the aebleskiver mixture and before the first turn.
Aebleskiver are commonly enjoyed in Denmark leading upto and at Christmas and perhaps for New Year breakfast. However consumption is year round, and there are aebleskiver restaurants in some traditional hamlets in Denmark, as well as around some parts of the USA.
Sometimes the spelling misses the first A out - to be Ebleskiver - in fact in Denmark the Ae is a single letter as part of a 29 letter alphabet (though it was only in recent decades that w was accepted as a letter distinct from v so previously Danish was described as using 28 letters.).
We happily describe Aebleskiver as Danish Donuts, as it preserves the national origin and is an adequate description of them, and the USA do have a product Pancake Puffs which is derived from the Aebleskiver - but sadly this lacks the Danish reference.
